Local SEO Mistakes

How to avoid these 7 local SEO blunders

As a local business owner you have a ton of things on your to do list every day. It’s easy to overlook or not be aware of some of the things you need to do with your online presence to stay up with all the changes going on with Google and the other marketing channels.

So in the spirit of doing all we can to avoid having our local search rankings tank, we’ve put together 7 easy to make local SEO mistakes to stay away from. Here’s hoping you do.

  1. Lack of local content – If you want to attract a local audience, you need a little bit of local content. Not only that, it would be great if that could happen on an ongoing, regular basis, as Google always rewards fresh content.
  2. Keyword strategy is non-existent – If you are unsure just which keywords you wish to target, you are lost before you start. Take some time to do or commission some keyword research so you can properly optimize your site.
  3. Few or no reviews – You need these, and the best way it to ask some of your most satisfied customers to help you. They will usually be happy to, and this social proof will go a long way for you. Don’t try to manipulate reviews; you will be discovered.
  4. Inconsistent NAP data – Be sure that your name, address and phone is the same across all social and web platforms. Easy to do, and very important for Google.
  5. Not using videos – Don’t think videos are for local SEO? Try again. Rank easily on YouTube for local keywords your customers are searching for.
  6. Absence of Social media – Be sure you tie in your social media pages into your site, and give people the opportunity to share your content far and wide. If you ignore this one, you will be sorry.
  7. No mobile optimization – Since now over half of all searches are not just local in intent, they are done via a mobile browser, which means that your customers are out there looking for you on their phones, and you’re telling me you’re not available? That’s a bad idea.
