Link Building Evolved – Best Practices for 2014

While plenty of people in the post-Penguin Google reality would have you assume that link building as a form of helping you rank better in the search engines is dead, we would beg to differ.

While some of the old ways to acquire backlinks to your pages have undoubtedly become toxic, backlinks still mean much, as confirmed by the Google link spam monarch himself, Matt Cutts: “Links are still the best way that we’ve found to discover (how relevant or important somebody is) and maybe, over time, social or authorship or other types of markup will give us a lot more information about that.”

Since it’s now crystal clear that the Wild West days of link building are gone, they do still matter, and we’ve come up with some of the best practices for link building in 2014.

Internal linking on your site – Internal linking means the links you have on your own pages that (hopefully) lead to more relevant content on [Read more…]

Over Optimized Pages

Tips to Avoid Over Optimized Pages in WordPress

Many of you are aware that Google a while back instituted what they termed an over-optimization penalty, which essentially went after webmasters who had been trying to lift their pages in the search results by virtue of manipulating the keyword density of the page, whether or not it had any value for the reader.

This played out with folks being told to build their pages having a keyword density of between 2.5 and 5 percent for their primary keyword. The problem was, at least for many of us using WordPress and similar blogging platforms as our content management system, we now know that:

WordPress isn’t quite as “SEO ready” as we first thought!

It turns out that WordPress just loves to stuff your blog template with your primary keyword. Just by using some of the default and popular widgets [Read more…]

Email Follow Up with Customers

March 23, 2014 By Mike J

How to create a follow-up email series for those who opt-in

Once you’ve managed to get the signup, your struggle is only partially won. Even though they’ve now given you permission to email them begs the question, what do I do now?! You create an email follow up series, that’s what! Of course, there’s something of an art to this also.

What you don’t want to do is set one up with the intent of sending an email every couple of days filled with offers and sales pitches. This is a sure way to see your list shrink before your eyes, causing you to be in constant replenishment mode. Instead do your best to offer value and excitement via your emails, and not merely pitch fests. Let’s examine how you can make this happen.

Choose your goals – Knowing the exact result you wish to have is vital to your success in email. Whether you’re seeking to generate sales, create [Read more…]

Small Business Innovation

How to inject a massive dose of innovation into your company

While at first glance it would make sense that the smaller, more agile entrepreneurial companies among us would be by far the most innovative. You would think this would be true. And you also would be wrong. It’s not for a lack of trying or desire. It’s simply that smaller businesses do not have the R & D budgets, the staff, and the vision that larger companies can commission. Needless to say, the challenge for small business innovation is to break past the glass ceiling keeping it from innovating, and actually get into the game! Less than half of small businesses were brought into being as the result of a “new idea”, according to a study by Erik Hurst and Benjamin Wild Pugsley of the University of Chicago. They state that most new business is another “Me-too” venture, offering the already crowded marketplace another grocery, plumber or florist. Little innovation required, and consequently little growth.

So how does a small business get from the morass of just another business to one that is offering new and exciting products and services people are clamoring to try?

4 Strategies to create a culture of innovation in your business!

Buzzword Watch “SoLoMo”

June 23, 2013 By Mike J

How Can Your Business Benefit from SoLoMo?

If you haven’t yet adopted the concept of SoLoMo, (social, local, mobile) it’s high time to get connected and realize exactly how and why this is a most important direction for your small business to embrace.

So what is SoLoMo and why do you want it?

The unification of these three was practically unavoidable. As location based services are becoming more and more advanced, tracking our every move, it wasn’t such a huge step to having businesses be able to connect and touch someone, (like you!) with location based notifications and offers. Pew Internet & American Life Project recently found out that around 74 percent of smartphone users use their mobile devices to acquire local information, and approximately 18 percent are using them to check in on local businesses with geo-location services like Foursquare, Yelp and others. As more mobile users are seeking local products and services, either you and your company will find a way to serve these people, who are out, phone in hand and wallet virtually open, or you’ll notice that your competition will!

3 Ways to your business can employ SoLoMo

  • Utilize social media – Using your social media accounts, such as Facebook, Twitter and others to engage and inform your target audience is [Read more…]
